Oversized Agricultural Machinery Import — Full Door-to-Door Logistics
Published on March 25, 2025
Project Background
The client imported a batch of over-height and over-width agricultural machinery from Italy to Tianjin, China. The equipment is highly seasonal and places extreme demands on delivery lead time. However, the overseas shipper lacked experience with over-dimensional cargo loading and could not arrange flat-rack stuffing, lashing or issuance of a lashing certificate on its own. If left to the shipper, improper lashing would very likely cause shifting and damage during transit, or incomplete documentation could lead to detention by destination customs / inspection authorities, delaying the farming season.
Solution
Targeting the shipper’s limited capability and the over-dimensional nature of the equipment, we developed an end-to-end plan of “front-end factory pickup — loading at our own yard — ocean booking — destination clearance and devanning — final delivery”:
- Front-end pickup and short-haul: We arranged specialized flatbed trucks to pick up the cargo from the Italian factory and deliver the over-height and over-width equipment safely to our own yard in Ancona.
- Yard loading and lashing: At the Ancona yard, a team experienced in over-dimensional cargo operations completed flat-rack loading, steel-wire-rope / tightener lashing and waterproof tarpaulin coverage, and issued a lashing certificate that meets the shipping line’s requirements, ensuring the cargo stayed secure and safe during the ocean voyage.
- Ocean booking and transport: Based on the equipment dimensions, we booked flat-rack slots, arranged an ocean liner from the port of Ancona to Xingang Tianjin, and tracked the vessel’s status in real time.
- Destination clearance and devanning: After the cargo arrived at Tianjin Port, we promptly handled import customs clearance and, in parallel, arranged the yard to complete flat-rack devanning and lifting, safely unloading the equipment from the flat rack.
- Final delivery: We dispatched a flatbed truck of suitable tonnage to move the equipment from the Tianjin yard directly to the end user’s designated address, completing the door-to-door delivery.
Project Results
Through end-to-end involvement and forward planning, the following results were achieved:
- Shipper operational risk mitigated: Moving the loading and lashing steps into our own controllable yard eliminated at the root the hidden risks of unqualified lashing and missing certificates caused by the shipper’s inexperience.
- Equipment transport safety secured: The professional lashing and tarpaulin plan ensured that the over-dimensional equipment did not shift or get damp during the long ocean voyage, arriving at port in good condition.
- Overall lead time compressed: By locking in flat-rack slots in advance, pre-reviewing clearance documents, and simultaneously coordinating devanning and delivery resources, the time from the Italian factory to the Chinese field was kept within the busy farming window, meeting the client’s seasonal need.
- One-stop delivery experience: The client did not need to coordinate multiple suppliers separately; simply providing the delivery address was enough to complete the entire import process, significantly reducing management overhead.
