Chargeable Weight Calculation: Air, Sea & Rail

If you ship goods regularly, you’ve probably been confused by terms like ‘chargeable weight’ and ‘chargeable volume.’ Today, let’s take one minute to explain the calculation methods for air freight, ocean LCL, and China-Europe railway LCL once and for all. The core principle is four words: charge the greater.
First, air freight — the key metric is ‘chargeable weight.’ The rule: compare the volumetric weight with the actual gross weight, and use whichever is greater as the chargeable weight. The key conversion ratio: the industry standard is 1:167, meaning 1 cubic meter (CBM) of cargo is converted to 167 kg. Example: A shipment with an actual weight of 100 kg but a volume of 1.5 CBM. The volumetric weight is 1.5 CBM x 167 = 250.5 kg. Since 250.5 kg is greater than 100 kg, the chargeable weight for this air shipment is 250.5 kg. Air freight capacity is expensive, so it’s very unfriendly to lightweight, bulky cargo.
Next, ocean LCL and China-Europe railway LCL — the key metric is ‘chargeable volume.’ The rule is the same: compare the weight-based volume with the actual volume, and use whichever is greater as the final chargeable volume. The key difference lies in the conversion coefficient:
Ocean LCL: The coefficient is very generous, typically 1:1000, meaning 1,000 kg converts to 1 CBM. Example: Cargo weighing 3,800 kg with a volume of 3.2 CBM. Weight-based volume = 3,800 ÷ 1,000 = 3.8 CBM. Since 3.8 CBM is greater than 3.2 CBM, the chargeable volume is 3.8 CBM. Most general cargo is heavy relative to its size, so ocean freight is often charged by weight.
China-Europe Railway LCL: This is the important one — there’s no unified national standard. It depends on the carrier’s “stuffing coefficient.” Two common ones are:
- Coefficient 1:500 (1 CBM = 500 kg)
- Coefficient 1:425 (1 CBM = 425 kg)
Let’s calculate using 1:425: same cargo weighing 3,800 kg, volume 3.2 CBM. Weight-based volume = 3,800 ÷ 425 ≈ 8.94 CBM. 8.94 CBM is far greater than the actual volume of 3.2 CBM, so the chargeable volume is 8.94 CBM.
You see — the same heavy cargo has a chargeable volume of 3.8 CBM by sea, but nearly 9 CBM by rail. That’s a massive cost difference.
To summarize:
- Air freight: Compares weight, strict standard, uses 1:167 conversion — result is called chargeable weight.
- Ocean freight: Compares volume, generous coefficient (1:1000) — result is called chargeable volume.
- China-Europe Railway: Compares volume, mid-range coefficient (1:425 or 1:500) — always confirm the coefficient before shipping — result is also called chargeable volume.
